David Cameron, the Piers Gaveston Society and the Bullingdon Club

Boris-Johnson-Bullingdon

Over the past week, huge controversy has surrounded the imminent publication of Call me Dave, an unauthorized biography of David Cameron by his former friend and Conservative grandee, Lord Ashcroft. Among the revelations that the book is apparently making about the Prime Minister, there has been quite a lot of talk about the admittedly peculiar initiation rite that he is supposed to have performed in order to join the exclusive Piers Gaveston Society when he was at Oxford University. Besides, the polemic has drawn renewed attention to another well-known upper-class club that David Cameron belonged to during his years at Oxford (along with his Tory colleague, the Mayor of London and MP Boris Johnson, who is sitting on the right in the photograph above), and which, for better or worse, has contributed to his image as a ‘toff‘: the Bullingdon Club.
